Butterfly Stone was designed out of the love of the owners’ passion for sustainability. Natural site preservation influenced the arrangement of this 1,850 sqft creation with steel, wood, and large masonry walls for thermal mass forming the framework for this unique home.  The spatial positioning of details in this home was carefully sought to maximize the ability to use passive ventilation as much as possible with the geothermal HVAC in place to add supplemental heating/cooling only when necessary.  The butterfly roof design was intentionally used in efforts to best capture the rain water for reuse.  The windows were carefully situated to maximize the use of natural lighting therefore reducing energy consumption.  The detached garage connects to the house by a breezeway that takes advantage of the Venturi effect.  One’s attention is easily captured by the spiral staircase in the center of the downstairs and can be seen immediately upon entering the foyer which is a double height space to add even more splendor to the staircase which leads to the master suite. The master suite has a private balcony leading outdoors and is accompanied upstairs by an open balcony and loft area which overlooks the downstairs. The public spaces downstairs include an office which offers additional sleeping quarters for guests if necessary, full bath, a kitchen providing island seating, living room with fireplace, and mud room.  Because of such a mild climate, the screened porch offers an intimate setting for much of the year.
